Road to Confirmation – Initial Conversation Guide

Purpose

  • Confirmation is a major milestone where a youth makes their own vow of faith and receives a blessing.
  • Because this requires age, maturity, and understanding, there is flexibility as to when a youth is confirmed (10th or 11th grade).
  • The Initial Conversation happens to give each student, together with their parents and leaders, the chance to thoughtfully consider Confirmation, ask questions, and decide whether they are ready to begin the journey of taking personal responsibility for their faith.

Sacramental Requirements

  • Students must be baptized and sealed.
  • If records are missing, parents should work with This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to verify or document.
  • If not baptized/sealed, the Apostle will guide next steps.

Who Leads the Conversation

  • Rector and youth leader together with parents/guardians present.
  • Each conversation should be individual, not in groups.
  • Everyone should know in advance when the conversation will take place to avoid pressure or surprise.

Key Points to Share with the Student

  • Confirmation is a vow.
When you are confirmed, you make a vow before God to renounce Satan, surrender your life to God, and take responsibility for your own faith. This is a serious promise, but it is also a joyful step of trust.
    Questions to ask:
    • What do you think it means to “renounce Satan” in your everyday life?
    • How do you see yourself “surrendering to God”?
    • What does “taking responsibility for your faith” look like at your age?
  • It must be your decision.
Confirmation is not something parents, leaders, or friends can choose for you. It has to be your decision, because it’s your personal promise to God.
    Questions to ask:
    • How do you feel about making this kind of promise?
    • Do you feel ready, or do you need more time?
    • What would help you feel more prepared?
  • Timing is flexible.
Most students are confirmed in 10th grade, but if you don’t feel ready, you may wait until 11th grade. It’s better to wait and be sure than to rush into a vow you don’t fully understand.
    Questions to ask:
    • What makes you feel ready—or not ready—right now?
    • Do you see Confirmation as a “deadline” or as a decision you want to grow into?
  • Responsibility at age 18.
Once you turn 18, you are considered an adult and automatically responsible for your faith, whether or not you have been confirmed. Confirmation is a way to receive God’s blessing on the responsibility you’re already taking on.
    Questions to ask:
    • What changes for you when you think about owning your faith as an adult?
    • How might Confirmation strengthen your relationship with God as you move into adulthood?
  • Ongoing participation matters.
Whether or not you choose Confirmation right now, you are still part of the Youth THRIVE Small Group discussions. These discussions help you continue learning, asking questions, and growing in faith.
    Questions to ask:
    • How have the small groups helped you so far?
    • What kinds of questions about faith are you still wrestling with?
    • How can your youth leader, rector, or parents best support you?
    • Would you like to make your confirmation vow and receive your confirmation blessing next Spring?

If the Student Chooses Confirmation – Next Steps

  • Complete 6 online courses (approx. 2 hrs 20 mins total) on NDI or the NAC USA app.
  • Participate in 3 Checkpoint Conversations with parents, youth leader, and rector.
  • Hold a final conversation with the officiating minister before Confirmation Day.
  • The process ensures understanding of Christianity and NAC doctrine.

If the Student is Not Ready

  • A similar conversation will take place in 11th grade.
  • Leaders should continue to “check in” and provide support.

After the Initial Conversation

  • Rector/youth leader must complete the enrollment form for all students who say “YES.”
  • Enrollment triggers an email to student, parents, and support team with next steps.
  • Each student receives a Road to Confirmation workbook.
  • All guides and course materials are available on NDI without a login.
  • Confirmation services are held during Eastertide (between Easter and Pentecost).
