Thoughts from DA Kolb

As we continue the new year together, following is a verse from Proverbs 16:9 to set a tone for our plans and movements: A man's heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.

Because God has endowed humans with intelligence and reasoning, one can design for themself a plan for a goal and consider the ways and means necessary to accomplish this goal. We know that inferior creatures move by natural instinct and lack this ability. Thus, we should engage our intellect, reasoning, conscience, and wisdom to create plans!

The writer of this proverb shows us that even though we have our free will and the ability to do this, we are still subject to the direction and dominion of the eternal Father. Realizing this, our plans and goals should be pleasing to and glorify God. If we plan a way so as to glorify God—that is, that aligns to His will—we can anticipate that He will direct our steps by His Spirit and grace, and our plan will come into fulfillment. However, even if we devise a plan with a great probability of success, God still has the means to "order or direct" the plan, and He may direct our steps to what was least intended.

Therefore, we can see the gist of this verse is to teach us to remember and act according to what is written in James 4:13-17: Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit"; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, "if the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that."

For the year ahead, let us continue to make plans and designs, let us strategize the best ways to serve and care for God's people, and let us remember to glorify God in every step so that... our God and Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way... (1 Thessalonians 3:11).
