Thoughts from DA Kolb

As we near the end of [the year], the following words of God from Deuteronomy 8, subtitled Remember the Lord Your God, truly seem appropriate for us:

“Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him…When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the Lord your God for the good…which He has given you.

Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments…lest—when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them…and all that you have is multiplied; when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God…who led you through that great and terrible wilderness…who fed you…with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do you good in the end—then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’ (Then) you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant…as it is this day." (Verses 6, 10-18)

Let us recognize the “manna”—or abundance of blessing and spiritual life—that the Lord has given us, which perhaps our forebearers did not know. And let us never become so high-minded to think that we have accomplished so much ourselves. Rather, in humility, let us recognize the great and loving hand of our gracious Father who, through His providence, has provided all so that we may do You good in the end, i.e., give to and serve others while preparing for Christ’s return.
