Thoughts from CA Schneider

Remember the story of Cain and Abel; both had brought their offerings to God and God accepted the offering of Abel and did not accept the offering of Cain. Even though over the years we have tried to rationalize why this was the case, in Genesis, there is no explanation. Therefore, Cain did not know why God didn’t accept his offering but accepted the offering of Abel, so he was upset and angry against God. And God told him: "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it." (Genesis 4:6-7) Now, in more modern language: "What is the matter with you? If your relationship with Me is okay, you will overcome this problem. If not, be aware—you will sin."

Sometimes in our life, we may face this kind of situation and we think or even express: “Oh this is an injustice! This one gets everything and this other one gets nothing. Both are working, both are faithful, both are serving the Lord, both bring their offerings, and the one God blesses, and with the other, He seemingly does nothing.” If this happens in our own life, we may not agree immediately with God: “This is not normal or equitable, why do You give something to him and nothing to me?”

And then, God responds and invites us: “Check your relationship with Me. Do you really love Me? Or do you serve Me and follow Me just to get something? Why are you New Apostolic? Why do you attend the divine service? Why do you bring your offering? Why do you serve the Lord in the congregation—simply to get a blessing? Or, is it because Jesus loves you and died for you? Is it because you want something, or is it because you love Me? If your relationship with Me is in order, then you will love Me and you will serve Me out of love, and continue to serve Me and to love Me, because you trust Me. But if it is out of self-interest, then you will encounter a problem with our relationship and even in your life.”

We know the rest of the story of Cain. He ignores God’s advice and falls into sin, becoming envious of his brother and murdering him. Should this be the same story for us? Can we fight against our own misconceptions, trust the Lord, and accept His advice in the Gospel message to deepen our relationship with Him? Can we accept the fact that the Lord in His omniscience does not explain everything to us and expects that we will trust Him to do what is right and appropriate for each one?

Or shall we ignore it and become jealous of our neighbor because of everything he has—his wealth, his success—and because he, like Abel, has done nothing wrong? And then, because our relationship with God is not genuine, as it should be, we begin to attack our neighbor (of course, not kill him!), but the way we relate to him, talk about him, and even the way we talk to him becomes different, and our love for our neighbor diminishes... This is the beginning of sin.

Dear servants: we, as well as our brothers and sisters, will have to face these kinds of situations where there is an obvious injustice—one gets and the other does not. But, before we fall into sin and attack our neighbor, let us check our relationship with God! That is the important thing. In this experience, it was also a way for God to show that when your relationship with Him is in order, you can and will love your neighbor. These two things are very much related—love for God and love for you neighbor.
