"Lent" - For Your Journey summary, Episode 89

Although the term “Lent” is mostly associated with the Catholic Church, various Christian denominations also observe it. Which is why we also look at this season as a wonderful preparation in contemplation of Jesus Christ, His passion, His sacrifice, and His resurrection.

Lent is thought of as a time of fasting (from food). In a recent service, however, the Chief Apostle provided us with a definition of fasting from a fresh perspective: to let go of the things that are not essential and focus on that what which brings you closer to Christ. This requires intentionally setting aside time, and allowing space in our hearts and minds to focus on Him.

There are many things we can fast from (technology, certain activities...), and replace them with reflection and meditation. We find encouraging words referring to this in Philippians 4:8: “whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” As we meditate on these things, we meditate on Christ, and as we do this, we will have a deeper understanding and experience of Holy Week.
