"National Day of Prayer 2024" Message from DA Schnabel

Originally observed in 1952 and officially designated as the National Day of Prayer since 1988, the first Thursday of May each year serves as a poignant reminder of the power of collective faith. This day becomes an opportunity to join the Christian community throughout the nation, as we put our prayerful shoulder to the wheel with them.

As you remember, our theme for this year, based on the timeless words of Apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians, “pray without ceasing,” is "Prayer Works!" Let us explore together the significance of this theme, in the context of the National Day of Prayer.

As a nation, we face diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and a myriad of challenges. In these moments, prayer becomes a common ground that unites people from all walks of life.

It is in prayer that we find strength, solace, and a shared sense of purpose that transcends our differences.

Prayer is how we communicate with God, and a way God communicates with us. In Scripture, we see prayers answered, like Hannah in 1 Samuel (1 Samuel 1:9-28), Zachariah in Luke 1 (Luke 1:5-25), and Paul and Silas in Acts 16 (Acts 16:25-34). Prayers of thanksgiving and praise are also offered, throughout the Psalms, and by Jesus Himself at the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:38-44).

Drawing inspiration from these biblical examples, we witness the transformative power of prayer. Across different faiths and individual journeys, commonality is discovered in the sacred act of supplication and seeking a connection with God.

These shared moments of reflection not only bridge gaps but also become catalysts for unity, in realizing we are a part of something larger than ourselves, which can contribute to positive change in our lives and communities.

Suggested themes for your prayers [on this National Day of Prayer] include compassion, strength, sanctification, and unity. By focusing on these themes, we contribute to the shared strength that emerges from everyone participating in this unique day.

Expressing our deepest gratitude for the unity that prayer brings to our nation, I encourage each of you to carry the spirit of unity through prayer beyond this day. [L]et’s celebrate the collective strength of prayer. May our prayerful expressions continue to resonate within our soul, reminding us that indeed, prayer works.
